Terry Stanley
Specialists
Go Wildcats!!! Hi, my name is Mr. Terry Stanley and this is my 26th year of teaching! I am married to my beautiful wife, Tammy Stanley and have two beautiful children, Luke and Laurel, who are both here at MAT. Before joining the McKeel team I served six years in the United States Air Force. After completing my service time and graduating from Southeastern University with a BA in Elementary Education I spent nine years at Lime Street Elementary both as a second and fourth grade teacher. Next, I worked with 42 schools all over Polk County for five years as a Writing Consultant for Write Reflections. Given the opportunity, I then took a position at South McKeel where I taught six more years as a Language Arts teacher. That's when I gained my ESE certification and came out of the classroom to take a position as an Academic Coach in the BYPASS here at McKeel Academy for the past five years. Now I teach two Learning Strategies classes and work with small groups and individuals needing tutoring and testing accommodations. It is amazing to be a part of the MAT team and I look forward to another great year of learning! Yes, after 25 years in Education...I still love my profession!!! Go Wildcats!
Career Shadowing
The Schools of McKeel Academy is dedicated to providing educational opportunities that go beyond the traditional classroom. As a part of this commitment, students at South McKeel Academy participate in alternative activities such as Career Shadowing. Career curriculum and exploration is an integral part of the core philosophy shared by all of the McKeel schools. When students receive career information at an early age, school involvement and school performance improve. Students increase their social and interpersonal skills. Students' confidence, competence and motivation increase, and this leads to academic success. Providing students with this opportunity to expand their horizons and to gain perspective about their future is something we are proud of!
Career Shadowing for 6th grade at SMA is on May 15, 2018. On that day, students will work side-by-side with a responsible adult, who works outside of his/her home and agrees to allow them to spend the day on the job with him or her.
About Career Shadowing:
1. All students in grades 6-12 are required to participate.
2. Students should select careers of interest to them. Parents/guardians should assist them in making their selection and in securing a location.
3. Students may NOT shadow teachers at a McKeel school.
4. HIPPA laws may prohibit shadowing at a healthcare facility.
5. Students should not report to school on Career Shadowing day, but should go directly to the Career Shadowing site.
6. Transportation to and from the selected location will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian. Stay tuned for additional information.

* Please be aware that grades in Canvas are not weighted. While Canvas does reflect an accurate score on individual assignments the overall grade shown may be higher than the actual class grade. To see feedback on assignments and individual scores, use Canvas. For the most up-to-date grades please access McKeel Online Gradebook.
Homework
Homework for Language Arts is normally reading for 20 minutes a night. However, if your child uses their time wisely in the morning and afternoon, they should be able to complete their reading at school. If a student does not understand a word, they should google it for meaning or ask a parent, friend, or teacher. A Spelling list will also be incorporated into their daily homework which should take five minutes a night. The lists will be pasted in their notebooks which cover the most commonly misspelled words in middle school. An informative assessment will be given that will count 25 points towards their 40 percent category for their overall grades.
