Wilma Viers
Reading Interventionist
Welcome Wildcats!! As a Reading Interventionist, I have the opportunity to work with K-3 students, and to work closely with parents and staff to develop strategic lessons that enrich the reading curriculum. I am fortunate enough to work with a professional staff who is always eager to add to their literacy knowledge and incorporate this knowledge into their repertoire of teaching strategies. We're in this journey together so be sure to communicate often with your child's teacher.
I earned my Degree in Education from Florida Southern College. I have taught K-3 students for 31 years with 18 of those years at SMA. In addition, I have my reading endorsement which the Florida Department of Education requires for this position. I attended the Institute for Multi-sensory Education (imse) and earned a certification in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading.
Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed on the page. The students I work will be taken on a journey of discovery, amazement and wonder -- That's what reading a good book feels like. We all know the educational benefits of reading, such as improvement in vocabulary, speech, and writing. But reading goes beyond these educational benefits. It benefits the reader emotionally and mentally. Reading truly is the best friend, you thought you would never find.
